What Are The Parts Of A Front Matter?
Have you experienced reading a book? There is a hardbound and there is also an electronic format usually called portable document format (PDF). A book is composed of different parts including the front matter. Readers usually skip the front matter part of a book.
If you have noticed, there is a part of a book that is numbered with lower-case Roman numbers and this is the front matter. It is where you can find some information about the author and the publisher. The part of the book with the lowest number of pages is the front matter. The front matter is composed of the following subsections.
Frontispiece – this subsection may or may not be present in a front matter. This is made with decorative illusion that is printed on the side facing the title page.
Title page – is typically where you will see the title of the book and the name of the author. You will notice that it has the same content as the cover and the spine.
A front matter has this copyright page that is usually called “colophon”. This part can be found on the reverse of the title page and it is where you can find technical information just like the copyrights, typefaces, edition dates, and ISBN. Here you will see the names of the printers and of the publishers.
A front matter has this dedication page which may not be on every book. You will learn about the inspirations of the authors that made them come up with a book.
A front matter has this epigraph that is also an optional part of a book. This has a phrase, excerpt, or quotation from a poem will be put. This is also called a preface.
A front matter has this table of contents which serves a great purpose in a book. It is where the readers go to first. You can find here the list of the chapter headings with their specific page numbers.
Foreword – may also not appear on all front matters. This can be found before a preface and is not written by the author.
A front matter has this preface that is also optional. This is where the author puts his or her introduction. It is where the introduction of the story can be found and may also include a short story regarding the creation of the book.
